Motivating employees is an art

Motivating employees is an easy task, with little effort on the employer’s side. It can be achieved. I do not know why employee motivation still remains to be a mystery for many managers. The truth is, it does give good results for both the employer and the employee.

I personally get excited whenever there is an appreciation for my work. Who doesn’t? Recognition at the work place is ranked first among employee motivation and is a widely known fact. An employer, who acknowledges and commends his employees will never have a problem in maintaining a good work culture and retain his employees.

The same motivation will never work for all employees, as not all employees have the same likes and dislikes. Motivate employees based on their desire, interest and passion.

Employee motivation need not be in the form of monetary benefits always. A pat on the back, a quick comment or a small handwritten note will do as well.

Once I got a chance to read the book “The service profit chain”. I was so impressed with the way the author made a point, that for any business to have sustained profits year after year it should build a work environment that keeps talented employees focused and attracted. The employees need to be motivated in the right way to show their commitment towards work.

In many organizations, employees do not know whether they are performing their tasks to the expectations of their managers. This is mainly because of the lack of motivation from the manager’s side.

A good friend of mine, who is an employee in an organization, told me, “we hear from our management only when we do something wrong”.

Precise motivation

I personally feel that some managers do appreciate their employees, but don’t know how to show it. Appreciation needs to be specific. That’s what motivation theory says. Appreciate employees full-heartedly. Instead of saying “grateful for the job done”, be more precise by telling them how their effort really matters and how it made a big difference.

As an employer, you need to have a clear mission for your organization. You should clearly know what you are doing and what your goal is.

An organization head must be passionate and excited about the employees mission. One cannot expect the employees to be excited when the boss is not.
